Create Your Dream Closet-- It's Like Having Your Own Personal Boutique!

Have you ever wished that you could have a beautiful, huge dream closet like you see in magazines, you know complete with a chandelier, built-in shelving and even furniture? Over-the-top closets aren't just for celebrities anymore, and you don't need a space the size of a football field in order to have a fun, functional and personalized dressing area. If your master bedroom doesn't have a large walk-in or an adjoining sitting room, you could consider using a corner of your bedroom or a guest room.

Regardless of the space that you select, your "dream closet" shouldn't be hard to create-- it should be easy because it should be all the things you love (but might not use elsewhere in the house). But this is YOUR space, so decorate it with YOUR style! Another way to  think about it is as if it were your own personal boutique where everything is your size! Think about how your favorite boutiques look and feel, and then try to re-create that.

Here are some ideas for creating your own dream closet!
  • Select the space you would like to use whether it's your walk-in, an adjoining sitting room, a guest room or just a corner of your bedroom.
  • Hang a huge mirror with an ornate frame in silver or gold.
  • Purchase a fun piece of furniture that you can lounge on (while contemplating your outfits for the day.) This could be a small sofa, ottoman, chaise lounge or anything else. Don't forget a fun rug too!
  • Hang lots of glass shelves along one wall for displaying your prettiest shoes. Add track lighting to show them off.  (Hide the ugly ones, or better yet get rid of them!)
  • Install built-in shelving in varying heights (Create spaces with a bar for hanging clothes and others for folded items like sweaters.) If you can't do built-ins, consider purchasing stand-alone shelving.
  • Add a table in the center of the space which can be used for arranging accessories such as scarves, jewelry, etc...

  • If you need extra space for hanging clothes, purchase a clothing rack (a steel one that is sturdy) and place it in the corner with your favorite items only. Plan out your outfits and then hang them grouped together here.
  • Hang a chandelier in the center of the room.
  • Purchase a dress form, a great way to try out different outfits and it looks so cool too!
  • Since this is your space, try personalizing it with a splash of your favorite color. Try painting one wall with this color and then add coordinating furniture and accessories.
  • Consider wallpaper. Bold graphic patterns or vertical stripes add personality and provide an interesting backdrop for your clothing.
  • Add glamourous fixtures.   An antique-looking doorknob adds a beatiful touch and you can go one step further and add similar dresser drawer pulls to really pull the look together!
  • Add an inspiration board or pretty corkboard to display magazine clippings of your favorite outfits.
  • Display a few framed photographs with fancy frames (think bold silver or rhinestone frames).
  • Add some style books to the shelf.

I was in Sam's Club the other day and one of the vendors was selling something called Avani Dead Sea products. I have never used any Dead Sea skincare products before, but I've always been curious so I stopped to check it out.  I am a big skeptic about skin product claims and have pretty much used the same cleansers, moisturizers and peels for years.  I've fallen too many times for a product that promises to transform my skin, make me look younger, etc... only to be dissapointed. There are a few exceptions (products that actually do all of those wonderful things), which in my experience include Retin-A, Alpha Lipoic Acid with DMAE, Peptide anti-wrinkle creams, and Glycolic Acid (look for posts on those later.)

The Avani representative had something for sale called "Avani Skin Renewal Facial Peel" and she said that it would nearly instantly remove dead skin and impurities.  She smoothed a little on the back of my hand,  and in a few seconds something that looked like dead skin appeared.  I was still skeptical,  so she showed me that if she reapplied in the same spot, less and less "dead skin" would appear, which is what happened. It really seemed to work,  so I went ahead and bought it for $39.99.

I have been using it on my face regularly and can tell that my skin is looking brighter and healthier since I started. I really do think it's removing clogged pores and impurities along with the dead skin because my skin is looking fresher and healthier.  According to the website, it contains a unique combination of Natural Plant Extracts, Dead Sea Mineral Salts and Vitamin E & C. It  removes dead cells, excess oils and other impurities through deep cleansing which leaves the skin nourished and feeling fresh and radiant. I spoke to a company representative in L.A. and found out that the product is made in Israel and that they actually ran out of product over the holidays because it's so popular.  I also read reviews on Amazon and women gave similar reviews to mine- nearly 5 stars! I am not a skincare expert, so please check with your doctor before beginning any new skincare routine.

Pretty Awesome Time-Saving and Organization Tips for the New Year!

What is it about the new year that makes us want to get things organized top to bottom?  My theory is that the Christmas decorations, empty boxes and piles of presents sitting around the house start to get to us…a lot!  I say take advantage of this urge to de-clutter and get things organized because obviously having an organized home goes hand-in-hand with time management, and ultimately success and happiness in life.
In my quest to get myself more organized this year, I have compiled a list of tips to help with some key areas that have big effects on our time including home organization and cleaning; meal preparation; and morning beauty routines.  I hope you find them useful!
GET YOUR HOME ORGANIZED- 15 minutes goes a long way!
1. Set a timer for 15 minutes per room, clean as hard as you can and move onto the next room. Clean and organize this way for an hour twice a week if you can.
2. Once a week, go around your house and find 10 items to either throw away, give away or sell on ebay and put them in a designated box for each category.
If you clean for an hour twice a week using the 15 minute rule (total of 2 hours per week) plus continue to get rid of 10 things per week, you will notice a huge difference in your house.  The reason this method works is because it forces you to work as fast as you can which saves time and because you have to move on to another room after 15 minutes, so  your whole house gets attention.   There is a book with a really weird name called “Sink Reflections”  where this idea came from and the author, who calls herself "The Fly Lady" (also really weird) has a lot of awesome tips for getting your whole life organized!

MEALS- Make 3 dinners at once and save tons of time!
1.   At the beginning of the week make a “meal plan” based on what your loved ones want to eat and then supplement with a recipe or two from your cookbook. Then shop for everything at once if possible.
2.    Make 3 dinners at once (eat one that night and freeze two to use over the next few weeks).  Just pick out your favorite casserole and triple the recipe. Lasagne, enchiladas, shells and cheese all freeze really well and taste great! Make things even easier by buying aluminum pans that you can recycle and then you don’t have any dishes! Imagine if you cooked this way twice a week for a while—you’d have an awesome stockpile in your freezer of healthy and yummy dinner choices.
STREAMLINE YOUR MORNING ROUTINE- Time Saving Beauty Tips and More...
1.   Set your phone timer for 12 minutes while you shower (and actually get out when it goes off).

2.   Get your makeup and haircare products organized so that they are ready to go in the order you need them. You don’t need to be racing around looking for things in the morning.

3.   Pick out your clothes the night before and iron them. (Then don’t change your mind in the morning unless you have to!) Even better, put together a whole week's worth of outfits and write them down if you need to so you have a plan for every day. List shoes, accessories, bags, etc...
4.   Wash your hair at night, put in a little leave-in conditioner and let it air-dry (saving your locks from daily hair drying damage). In the morning use your curling iron to add waves and then smooth the bangs and hair around the face with a flat iron. Or, pull hair up for a really quick and polished look.

Aveeno Active Naturals Nourish + Condition Leave-In Hair Treatment Spray
A great leave in conditer to try.

5.     If you do blow dry your hair, consider an ionic blow dryer, which speeds drying time considerably. Also, there are new products that claim to reduce drying time by 50% as well as reduce friction/protect the hair while drying. KMS free shape quick dry blow dry spray and Redken Satinwear Blowdry Lotion are two to try.

Carel Soft Bonnet Ionic Hair Dryer
Alright, this is a little old-fashioned -- it's a hair bonnet hair dryer. If you have long hair, you could roll towel-dried hair
on velcro rollers and then put this bonnet on-- it dries your hair hands-free. Since you don't have to hold the dryer you can save time and put your makeup on or catch up on emails,  or whatever!

6.   For an easy and pretty look  for your face, use an exfoliater  to remove dry skin and then apply moisturizer (with sunscreen— yes even in the winter!)  There are also some great tinted moisturizers with SPF too, that give your skin just a little coverage, but lots of moisture. Using a concealer or crème foundation that is a perfect match, go over red spots or blemishes and blend. This gives you a pretty, fresh complexion without the look of caked-on foundation over your whole face which can make you look older (plus it takes longer). Use a clear mascara to brush brows in place. For eyes, do two coats of mascara (I like Lancome Definicils and Bad Gal by Benefit) and then put on a dab of lipstick and you’re ready! If you like to wear eyeshadow and blush there are products out there that work as both and are very flattering  for a work-day look.

Aveeno Active Naturals Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30
Huge time-saver that gives your skin a healthy glow while protecting it from the sun-- tinted moisturizer with SPF!

Awesome concealer kit!

BAD gal by Benefit is an awesome mascara!

7.    For nails, try either no polish or a light pink or clear. Then use a clear top coat so that if it chips, you can’t see the chip. If you paint your nails and need to leave in a hurry, try putting them in a bowl of ice water to get them to dry fast.  Also, a great time to take care of your cuticles is in the bath or right after the bath. Avocado oil is awesome for softening cuticles and there are cuticle removers that work really well too. Get an orange stick and gently push cuticles back after you apply avocado oil.

Oh So Wet Quick Dry Topcoat
A good clear top coat won't show as much if it chips.

8.  Make your lunch and your kids’ lunches the night before. No explanation needed here.

9.  Pack up your briefcase or whatever you need for your day before you go to bed.

10.  Fill your coffee pot  before you go to bed so that it’s ready to brew with the flip of a switch.

OTHER  MISCELLANEOUS THOUGHTS ON SAVING TIME AND GETTING ORGANIZED:
1.   Try to CHECK EMAIL ONLY TWICE A DAY. You would be surprised at how much time is spent looking at email. Set up spam filters and block the ones that get through to save time in the future.

2.    Take 20 minutes each morning to plan your day (or the night before- even better!) Group like activities together, such as errand running to the same part of town. Structure your day for balance by scheduling specific times for work, home and play and then stick to them. Don’t let the conveniences of technology sabotage your precious time with family either -- put away the iphone and laptop and hang out with the people who matter the most! (This is hard to do I know!)

3.    Make  your "to-do"  list  accomplishable-- stick to 2 to 3 big things per day if you can.  If you must list out everything that you can think of  (I like to write it all down and then accomplish everything by week’s end) highlight or star the 2 or 3 big things each day that you can reasonably expect to get done.

4.    Schedule time to slow down. Slowing down actually makes time seem to slow down. Schedule a couple of 15 minute breaks throughout your day to go for a walk or listen to a meditation or even take a nap!  Take care of yourself and keep things in balance.

5.  Use a DVR. Don’t let a program’s scheduled time dictate when you have to watch it. Plus, watch it faster by skipping the commercials.

6. Last but not least, schedule your exercise early. I am talking about early, as in before the rest of the family gets up. Jump on your treadmill or go for a jog outside. There really is no better feeling than having your workout done before your day starts. Plus it saves time, because you only get ready/shower once.

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you enjoyed this!

Dressing Your Age-- What Does That Mean Anymore?

Dressing Your Age-- What Does that Mean Anymore?
I am one of those people who forgets how old I really am sometimes.  I think I’m stuck somewhere in my late 20’s and admittedly sometimes like to dress like I'm still in my 20's too. Not by shopping in the juniors department, but I love to wear clothes with feminine touches, and I love to wear a lot of color and trendy jewelry sometimes.  I wonder sometimes if I should revamp my whole style and give up those things that I love because I really fall into the 30-something age range.
After doing some researching and thinking on the subject, it seems that anymore fashion rules are made for both following and breaking. I think we can thank our beautiful friends in Hollywood for that! With diet and exercise (and of course a few nip-tucks here and there) many people are looking so much younger than they really are, allowing them to get away with dressing younger for longer.   But since not all of us can look quite as awesome as our celebrity friends (remember that is their job to look great), it's probably good to have a few rules to follow (or break if you want).  Ultimately though here is what it boils down to-- wear what makes you feel great and what you feel most confident in! Wear what you LOVE!!!
With that being said, there are no hard and fast RULES, but here are a few tips that will help you look great at any age:
1)Wear clothes that fit well despite the size. Don’t demand to squeeze into an 8 if a 10 fits better. Sizes vary from store to store and clothes that are too tight can make you look heavier (think muffin top.)
2) Don’t adopt a trend if it doesn’t work for your body style. The skinny jeans trend was so tempting for me, however I have bigger calves and that style of jeans just doesn’t look good on me, so I don’t wear them.
3) Don’t forgoe style for comfort. Let’s not look like we’re going to the gym all the time.
4) The older you get, the better quality fabric and make of the piece should be.
And here are some "rules" for each age range as well. Feel free to break them as you wish:
20’s:  In your 20’s, anything goes. It’s about personal style, lots of color, very high heels and hemlines. You can wear flirty, feminine styles as well as edgier pairings.  Try to avoid nude pantyhose and pants with pleats.  Lots of jewelry is great—from long necklaces to bangles.
30’s: It’s time to get a little more serious with fashion-forward styles while keeping  a polished look. Start looking for better quality pieces in your 30’s and make investments in pieces that stand the test of time. Forget trends that don’t work with your body type. Throw in a few trendy pieces here and there.

Style icon Sienna Miller is in her 30's!

I love this outfit, and Sienna Miller's style. She is one of my absolute favorites!

40’s: Stick with classic silhouettes and colors but add interesting embellishments, vibrant colors and patterns. Avoid ruffles and bows, eyelet tops, as well as matronly-looking pastel separates and shapeless suits.  You can forget the old rule of keeping the hemline below the knee after 40. If you feel comfortable in it, go for it and if you are in good shape, you can wear almost anything. Again, let your confidence be your guide.

Style icon Jennifer Aniston is in her 40's!

50’s: Tailoring and structure are important. Stick to clean lines in a simple palette.  Statement pieces like a chunky necklace or signature cuff go further in your 50’s than a strand of pearls for instance. Monochromatic outfits are great, smart-looking choices that make a statement too. Don’t go overboard with the casual outfits—keep them current.

Style icon Sharon Stone is in her 50's!

60’s: Traditional pieces should keep you looking elegant. Black, white and red make bold statements and  tweed suits, trousers and coatdresses are great items to have. Splurge on fur-trimmed items or brocade.  Throw on a wrap for evening if you aren’t happy with the tone of your arms and show some leg if you want to.

Say Cheese! Tips for Looking Your Best in Pictures!

Have you ever noticed how some people ALWAYS seem to look great in pictures?   It often suprises me how some people look nothing like themselves in pictures.  I'm not sure how this happens, but here are some tips to help you look your best during the holidays or anytime!

1. FIND NATURAL LIGHT. Stay away from overhead lights, and look for places with good natural light for a picture. Believe it or not, an overcast day is one of the best opportunities for outdoor pictures because of the diffused natural light. Similarly, inside picture taking is enhanced when lots of natural light makes it way in through windows, and then you can supplement with artificial lighting (whatever lighting is in the room.)
2. STAND TALL...and look thinner. Turn slightly to the side so that one shoulder is closer to the camera and then look forward to the lens.
3. AVOID THE DOUBLE CHIN- Make sure that your picture taker is taller than you or you’ll end up with a double chin. Lens should be at eye level or above. Push your chin out an inch or so more than normal also.
4. TAN (IN A BOTTLE OF COURSE)- I always feel like I look better in pictures if I have been using sunless tanner on my face and neck. Especially in the winter. It just gives you a little extra glow.
5. BRIGHTEN YOUR SMILE- Use teeth whitener, and apply shiny gloss to your lips. This does two things—helps you smile wide and makes your mouth look fuller. If you wear lipstick, go with a shade that is two tones darker than your natural, and only wear a natural color liner. You should still put gloss on top.
6. KEEP IT MATTE- Do not have any shine on your skin. Keep it matte with extra powder. This is really important. NO SHINY SKIN!
7. FOCUS ON THE EYES- Make your eyes look larger by blending darker shadow colors in the crease and light, shimmery ones on the brow bones. Apply eyeliner from the outside of the lower lash to almost the inner part. You may also want to wear an extra coat of mascara.
8. GET A GLOW- Blush is tricky. You should wear some, but not too much. Practice around with it. I like to put a peachy-pink cream blush on the apples of my cheeks and then go over it with blush cheekbones, forehead, nose and chin.
Last tip—think of something really funny or that makes you happy (your kids; your dog; your grande, skim, extra-hot latte with whip) to get a natural smile during pictures. The best pictures are the ones where you genuinely are feeling happy!
