Nothing adds personality to a room like a wall collage. Not only are wall collages fun to make, but they allow you to express your creativity and showcase multiple pieces of artwork as a collective piece that otherwise might not go together. They also serve as great conversation starters! Read on for some tips to create your very own wall collage!
1. Select a space for your wall collage. Sometimes, a wall area between two chairs as shown in the picture below works well, a stairwell, the space under the stairs, a wall in your office or study, or in your bedroom. A wall collage can be a great conversation piece, so you might want to select an area where visitors can see it easily.
2. Select items for your collage. This probably seems like the hardest part, but if you start with artwork or photos that you already have and like, they can serve as a starting point. Start laying them out on the ground below where your collage will be, and play around with different arrangements. Don't be afraid to add items that are of different shapes, colors and frames. If you notice in the picture below, there is a general color scheme of pinks and greens, but there is also a splash of red and yellow and there are white, silver and black frames. They also added the letter "S" which adds some contrast to the hard lines of the frames. If you need to purchase additional items and most of your collection so far is pretty new looking, don't be afraid to hit up Goodwill or some yard sales to find a few older looking pieces. I think one of the things that makes a wall collage look good is a variety of old and new pieces. Another thing that I think kills the look of a wall collage is too much "word art" or "sayings." You know what I mean...plaques that say things like, "live, love, laugh" or "live each day like it's your last." I think they can be cute, but maybe limit to one per collage.
3. Start hanging! I like to start in the center and work my way out (horizontally and vertically). Using the arrangement that you have on the floor, start transferrng it to the wall piece by piece. You may find along the way that you'd like to change the location of a few items, which is fine! And don't worry about making the amount of space between pieces perfect. It's not possible to keep everything exact unless all of the items that you are using in the collage are exactly the same size. As you can see in the examples below, there are some items in the collage that have more space between them than others.
